I once read this story about a Japanese Zen master who founded a temple in Minneapolis. As I remember it, he was very old and ill and had ceased teaching, except on special occasions.

At one celebration at the temple, the Zen master was due to talk, but as the appointed hour approached he was nowhere to be found. Yet when the time arrived, the door to the dharma room slammed open and the Zen master hobbled to the center of the room.

When he got there, he cleared his throat, said one sentence, then turned around and hobbled out of the room and back to his apartment. Here is the one sentence he told the many guests who had gathered to hear his wisdom:

“Soon,” he said, “we will all be dead.”
